With a vision to see empowered youth leading self-sufficient lives through the arts and design, Kuumba Community Arts has been a part of the Ensley Community since 2013. Kuumba seeks to use creativity and design education for social change.
We are proud to announce the launch of our Teen Design Academy this fall in Ensley. The first stage of the TDA is an intensive six-month training program partnering 15 students ages 14-17 with seasoned, working professionals in graphic design and other fields associated with the communications arts. Participants will learn the fundamentals of visual design, conceptual thinking, and industry software and tools with a holistic approach that ties in writing, project management, execution and other skills to provide an early introduction to the communications arts industry needs of Birmingham.
Along the way students will be laying the groundwork to establish an operating teen advertising agency that will serve local small businesses and not-for-profit organizations. The agency will be a place where these young creative people will be able to earn a wage for their creative work, develop professional portfolios, and set out on a path to become leaders and collaborators in their businesses and communities. In the process, they will also gain a sense of the transformative power of art and design within themselves and in the world around them.
